VanDusen Exteriors is a family run business located in Parish, NY. The majority of their employees spend a significant amount of time in direct sun as part of their work.

Owners Eric and Shannon VanDusen want to reduce the risk of skin cancer for their employees and have recently partnered with Oswego County Opportunities through the Cancer Prevention in Action Program to enact a sun safety policy.

Shannon VanDusen, co-owner of VanDusen Exteriors says, “We have always provided sunscreen for our guys on the work sites, but making an official policy to stress the importance of sun safety, made sense! Our employees are like family to us and their health is of utmost importance.”

Skin Cancer Survivor, Penny Halstead states “I was one of those people that never thought they would get skin cancer. So far I’ve had 4 surgeries to remove basal cell carcinoma tumors. I’ve had a third of my eyelid removed, a large piece removed from the side of my nose, and several tumors removed from both legs. I want to use my experiences to help others avoid getting skin cancer. Seeing a local business value their employees’ health is great.”

With this new policy in place, VanDusen Exteriors will provide SPF 50 sunscreen to all of their employees, as well as lip balm with an SPF. In addition to providing these resources, the sun safety policy now states that outdoor employees of VanDusen Exteriors will receive annual sun safety training encouraging them to practice sun safety behaviors while on the job and new staff orientations will include information on sun protection, sun safety behaviors, and/or skin cancer prevention.

Christina Wallace, CPIA Program Assistant of Oswego County Opportunities says, “We commend VanDusen Exteriors for their commitment to employee health and safety by adopting a sun safety policy. Especially during these summer months, being mindful of the link between the harmful effects of the sun and skin cancer creates a healthy and safe workplace for both staff and business owners. We welcome all businesses in our county to consider adopting their own sun safety policy and to contact our office on how to get started.”

VanDusen Exteriors is located at 380 South Railroad Street, Parish, NY 13131 (315)652-9052
