“Child abuse in our communities is a serious problem,” said Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Karrie Damm. “We are helping families heal and play a major role in investigating and prosecuting abuse cases but we cannot do it alone. Ending child abuse takes a cooperative, community effort. We must empower community members and invite them to join us in our efforts. Children should be loved, protected and nurtured so they may grow up healthy with their sexual boundaries intact. That’s a goal that each and everyone one of us needs to be focused on.”
With that goal in mind, the Oswego County Legislature and the Oswego County Department of Social Services has implemented resources to the CAC to aid in that success. The CAC is offering a 2 hour training course entitled Stewards of Children©. Designed for organizations that serve youth, as well as community members that are concerned about the safety of children, Stewards of Children© is a nationally recognized, evidence based training program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes, and change child protective behaviors. This is a program of the Darkness to Light initiative.
“Stewards of Children© is an effective and impactful training that educates adults on how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child abuse. “I recently facilitated our first training and feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive,” said CAC Outreach and Prevention Advocate Connie Dumas. “The training focuses on empowerment. The skills encompassed in this training provide responsible adults a better understanding of what child abuse is and how it happens. It educates them on recognizing signs of child abuse, how to report it, and the importance of supporting others efforts to prevent sexual abuse.”
